ECE Associate Professor Aatmesh Shrivastava was selected by the Boston Intellectual Property Law Association (BIPLA) to be honored at their 14th Annual Invented Here! celebration for his patent, “Self-powered analog computing architecture with energy monitoring to enable machine-learning vision at the edge.”

Alumnus-Founded NapSpin Aims To Reshape Restaurant Work
Mike Foley, E’17, mechanical engineering, developed and launched the startup NapSpin, which produces machines that automate rolling silverware into napkins. Now with support from Northeastern’s GAP fund, Foley hopes to expand beyond the restaurant market to hospitals, hotels, and cruise ships.

Reprogrammed Pig Aortic Heart Valves Create New Options for Human Transplants
BioE Professor Ning Wang coauthored “Engineering Aortic Valves via Transdifferentiating Fibroblasts Into Valvular Endothelial Cells Without Using Viruses or iPS Cells,” published in Bioactive Materials. For the research, human skin cells were reprogrammed into heart valve cells and then used to successfully transplant a pig heart valve into a rodent.

Using Exoskeletons To Increase Mobility
Bouvé/MIE Assistant Professor Max Shepherd is leading a team of graduate students, including Fatima Tourk, PhD’27, mechanical engineering, to create a battery-powered exoskeleton that is intended to assist people with mobility issues and enable complex movements without causing discomfort. He co-authored research published in Nature on a new lower-limb exoskeleton.
